RICHARD III

Spring 2010

Directed by Laura Hubbard and Hilary Wartinger

For its Spring '10 production, BUSS put on one of Shakespeare's most popular histories, "Richard III". This play follows the rise and fall of one of the theater's most charismatic villains, Richard of Gloucester, as he murders and manipulates his way to the throne. Our production took the play out of its original 15th century setting and into a fictional dystopia where Richard's brilliance as a political manipulator and propagandist runs rampant, inspiring fear and ambition in those who cross his path. The production drew much of its aesthetic from propaganda art, influencing the color scheme, sets, costumes, and overall "big brother" atmosphere. At the same time, we explored the unexpected humor and seductiveness of evil, while confronting the harsh realities and heartbreak that can result from our entrancement. With plots, propaganda, strawberries, and a fun and hard-working cast and crew, this production will remain a fond BUSS memory.

The production took place April 15-17, in the Kenmore Classroom Building (KCB) 101.
